      Palatal Expanders for Kids

      Palatal Expanders

Correct crowding and other oral health issues.

Here at Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers, our Specialist Orthodontists may use palatal expanders to widen our patients’ upper jaws and create more space for teeth to address issues such as crowding and crossbites. It is often recommended for children and adolescents, as their jaw bones are still growing and more responsive to expansion.

      How do palatal expanders work?

Palatal expanders use the natural growth potential of young patients' upper jaws. In children and adolescents, the two halves of the palate are not fully fused, connected by a joint called the mid-palatal suture. By applying gentle, consistent pressure, the expander gradually widens this suture, stimulating new bone growth and effectively expanding the upper jaw.

      When are palatal expanders recommended?

Palatal expansion therapy is recommended for various reasons, including:

      Palatal Expanders

What are the types of palatal expanders?

Various palatal expander options are available, and your orthodontist will choose the best one for your child's specific needs.

      Rapid Palatal Expanders

This is the most commonly used expander. It is fitted in the roof of the mouth and attached to the back upper teeth for stability. The RPE's central screw mechanism, activated by a key, gradually and gently expands the upper jaw over several months.

      Removable Expander

For milder cases, removable expanders offer a convenient option that can be taken out for cleaning, meals, and other activities. This type of expander is custom-made from acrylic for a comfortable and secure fit.

      Bonded Expander

Similar to RPEs in function, this expander utilizes tooth-shaped acrylic caps that fit over the back teeth instead of metal bands. It is securely bonded in place for the duration of treatment.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have an orthodontic consultation by age 7. The orthodontist will advise if your child is a candidate for palatal expanders or other early interceptive options that can prevent the need for more extensive orthodontic intervention in the future.
