Do I need retainers?

Teeth can move throughout our lives because the bone that holds them in place is constantly breaking down and rebuilding. This natural process, combined with daily activities like biting, chewing, swallowing, and speaking, exerts pressure on the teeth, causing them to shift.

Even after your orthodontic treatment, these natural forces can still cause teeth to move. To prevent your teeth from relapsing or shifting to undesirable positions, we recommend that you wear your retainers to maintain your beautiful, straight smile.

Types of Retainers

Removable Retainers

These are typically clear plastic trays that you wear as instructed by your orthodontist.

Fixed or Permanent Retainers

These are thin wires bonded to the back of your teeth.

Proper Care for Your Retainer

Just like your teeth, your retainer needs daily cleaning to prevent bacteria buildup. Gently brush it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and water. You can also soak it at least once a week in a retainer-cleaning solution to prevent buildup. Do not use hot water to prevent damage.
Retainers are easy to misplace. Always store your retainer in its protective case when you’re not wearing it. This keeps it clean and reduces the risk of breakage or loss.
Products containing alcohol or bleach can damage your retainer and may be harmful if ingested. Stick to gentle cleaning solutions specifically designed for retainers.
When inserting or removing your retainer, use both hands to prevent unnecessary stress or bending.
Over time, retainers can wear out or may not fit as snugly. If your retainer no longer fits properly, consult your orthodontist.

How long should I wear my retainer?

Your orthodontist will provide specific instructions on how often and how long you should wear your retainer. A good rule of thumb is to wear your retainer for as long as you want to keep your teeth straight.
