      Silver Diamine Fluoride

      Silver Diamine Fluoride

Cavity treatment for children, minus the pain.

As parents, we will do everything we can to protect our children. But sometimes, despite your best efforts, cavities can still develop. At Drs. Nicolas & Asp Centers, we're here to help. We offer Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) treatment, a no-drill, no-shot, minimally invasive, and highly effective way to stop cavities in their tracks and prevent new ones from forming, giving your child a healthier smile.

What is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)?

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a topical, non-invasive antimicrobial treatment that is clinically-proven to prevent and arrest dental caries (tooth decay). It is a colorless, odorless liquid solution that is applied directly to the teeth to stop the progression of decay. SDF is typically applied to the affected tooth using a small brush or cotton swab, and the treatment is usually quick and painless. The solution is left on the tooth for a short period, usually 1-2 minutes, before being rinsed off.

What are the benefits of Silver Diamine Fluoride Therapy?

The active ingredients of SDF, silver and fluoride, work together to:

      Is Silver Diamine Fluoride safe?

Yes. SDF is clinically proven to be very safe when placed by a trained Specialist Pediatric Dentist in accordance to existing guidelines and protocols.

Who are best candidates for SDF?

SDF application are ideal for children, including those with special needs, who are at high risk of tooth decay or have difficulty undergoing traditional dental care. SDF is also a useful treatment option for patients who are anxious or fearful of traditional dental procedures, as it is non-invasive and does not require the use of drills or shots.

Who should not be treated with SDF?

SDF therapy is not recommended for patients allergic to silver, those with deep cavities that have reached the nerve, or individuals with open sores or ulcers in their mouth.

Are there side effects to SDF?

When SDF is applied, the silver oxidizes, turning the decayed area black while leaving healthy enamel unstained—proof that the treatment is working. In baby teeth, the staining is temporary as they naturally fall out. Some parents choose crowns to cover the discoloration.

SDF may also temporarily stain gums and lips, fading within days to a couple of weeks. With a skilled pediatric dentist, the risk of tissue staining is low. Your child might briefly notice a metallic taste, but it fades quickly.
